Visit the storeLalique Encre Noire Eau de Toilette is a woody-aromatic men's fragrance launched in 2006 and now one of the best-known vetiver-driven scents on the market. Its name is French for black ink, and that is exactly the idea: a damp, woody darkness with no sweetness and no fruit.
Its structure is deliberately spare. It opens on cypress and vetyveryl acetate, puts two vetivers side by side in the heart — Haiti vetyver and Bourbon vetyver — and softens into cashmere wood and musks. It was composed by Nathalie Lorson, and Lalique itself calls it a modern classic. If you love earthy, smoky vetiver this is squarely your scent; if you are after something sweet and crowd-pleasing, look elsewhere.
The bottle is part of the story too: a perfect cube of matte black glass with a wooden cap, inspired by the Biches inkwell Rene Lalique designed in 1913. Lalique has been a French glass and crystal house from the start, and that heritage shows in the shape of its flacons. Encre Noire comes in 50 and 100 ml; this listing is the 100 ml Eau de Toilette.
